Cresskill sits in the Northern Valley cold. Older roofs ice up at the eaves when attic heat melts snow that refreezes on the cold edge. New shingles alone do not stop that.

Heat leaks into the attic, snow melts, and water freezes at the eave. It then backs up under shingles. The stain on the ceiling is often inside the wall line, not in the middle of the room.
What the roof work can do
Ice-and-water membrane at the eaves and in valleys gives the backup water a sealed layer to sit on. It does not warm the attic. A scope that only says “ice shield” without saying how many feet up the slope is incomplete.
What the roof work cannot do
Baffles, insulation, and air sealing are attic work. If those are skipped, the dam returns on the next cold snap. Say that plainly so the homeowner does not think a shingle warranty covers ice.
