How to document storm damage on a high-value North Jersey roof

After wind or hail, a high-value roof needs a record before debris is hauled away. This is not legal advice and it does not tell your insurer how to pay. The storm-claims guide on this site covers the general homeowner steps.
- Photograph before cleanup
- Dry the house in without hiding the cause
- Separate damage from age
Photograph before cleanup
Shoot each slope, the ridge, dented metal, and any interior stain. Include a wide shot that shows the house, not only a close-up of one shingle. Hail bruises can be hard to see once granules are swept up.
Dry the house in without hiding the cause
Tarp a hole so the ceiling stops getting worse. Do not tear off the whole roof “for the claim” before anyone has seen it. Keep replaced pieces if you can do that safely. Throw-away day is how documentation disappears.
Separate damage from age
A storm can hit a roof that was already worn out. Say which slopes show impact and which show years of granule loss. An honest note helps you. A claim that calls all wear “hail” does not.
