Soffit intake on older homes: opening the eave so exhaust vents can work

Harding Township, Mendham, and Essex Fells houses often have solid or painted-shut soffits from earlier renovations. Adding a ridge vent without intake only pulls weather from the wrong places. The decision on the estimate is whether soffit intake is opened or restored as part of the ventilation plan.

Ridge and box vents are outlets. Without continuous or discrete intake at the soffit, the attic still cooks and ice still forms at cold eaves.

Insulation stuffed into the soffit, vinyl covers without vents, or painted wood panels can seal the attic. The inspection should look up from the eave, not only at the ridge.
What the intake line should name
Ventilated soffit panels, plug vents, or baffles that keep insulation out of the channel. A Mendham or Essex Fells bid that only adds ridge vent is half a ventilation job.
