Tree cover, north slopes, and an attic that cannot dry keep the butts wet. Moss is a symptom. Splits and cups are the failure. A sunny south slope on the same house can look ten years younger.

A few split shakes over solid decking can be replaced. A soft, moss-held field with daylight in the attic needs a tear-off. Do not overlay cedar with asphalt. The wood and the fasteners come off.
