Historic roofs in the Glen Ridge gas-lamp district

Glen Ridge’s gas-lamp streets are pre-war houses, often with slate or a long-lived shingle roof and a chimney that predates the flashing. The streetscape is part of the job. The borough, not this website, says what you may change.

Slate gets the repair-or-relay test. Asphalt on an older house may already be a second covering. Soft decking at the chimney is common. Photograph the material before you propose a different one.

Chimneys and dormers
These roofs leak at dormer cheeks and chimney counterflashing. A full replacement that reuses crumbled counterflashing wastes the tear-off. See the pre-war chimney article for the detail.
